Koaʻe nest in steep coastal cliffs, laying a single egg in rock ledges and cavities. In Hawaiʻi, this includes both the koaʻe ʻula (Red-tailed Tropicbird) and koaʻe kea (White-tailed Tropicbird). Adults spend most of their lives far offshore, returning to the same nesting sites each year to breed.

Across Hawaiʻi, koaʻe nest on remote sea cliffs and offshore islets, including areas on Kauaʻi (Nā Pali Coast), Oʻahu (Ka Iwi Coast, Moku Manu, Moku Nui), Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Maui (including Molokini), and Hawaiʻi Island (Kohala coast and offshore islets).

On Oʻahu, the Ka Iwi Coast supports the only known nesting colony of koaʻe ʻula on the island, monitored since the mid-2000s. After years of population growth, predation events in April 2023 and May 2025 resulted in multiple adult and chick deaths, with evidence pointing to free-roaming cats associated with feeding activity near Lānaʻi Lookout.

In May 2025, additional reports documented at least 21 dead koaʻe over a single weekend near Halona Blowhole, many of them chicks, indicating a concentrated mortality event along the same coastline.

Koaʻe at Ka Iwi are also vulnerable to artificial light disorientation, vehicle strikes, and human disturbance, especially where nesting habitat overlaps with roads and heavily visited coastal area
